Teaching Philsophy

Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome to my classroom.  I would like to tell you a little bit about how my classroom will work.  I describe my teaching style as student centered, experience based, and holistic. I strive to build a healthy community where students not only learn about science, but they learn what it means to be a responsible student, a supportive peer, and an informed citizen.

Student centeredAs a teacher it is my job to support each student in my classroom by giving them  all an opportunity to learn.  I value each student’s personal interests, strengths, and weaknesses.  As a group, we will take time to not only talk about science topics, but to discuss the learning process and how to set and reach goals.  I use feedback from my students to guide our future study, and make sure all the students know and understand the content.  I value my students thoughts and opinions.

Experience basedI create curriculum that includes hands-on activities, collaborative projects, and experiences that allow students to explore science topics from their own perspectives. I incorporate real world science issues to my curriculum to encourage the students to think and act like real scientists. I use the Next Generation Science standards to guide our classroom learning targets.  I will ask students to be responsible and accountable for their learning.

Holistic support-Learning is about more than just memorizing facts.  Each student is different, they may need different types of guidence to reach their goals.  In my classroom, I support my students in many ways.  I support students by giving them clear academic goals about learning by using learning targets.  I support social and emotional learning by making my classroom a safe and inviting environment that allows all students to participate and contribute ideas.  The students will spend time learning about how to work with others through colaborative projects and group discussions. Students will also gain skills that help them be in charge of their own learning experiences.
